Six Suggested Skincare Resolutions for Anyone

Whether you are new to skincare or the most advanced product junkie, setting yourself up for success is crucial, especially in a world of thousands of ingredients and product choices. Heading into a fresh new year is a good time to reflect on what is working and what isn't and also identify if there is an area you want to focus on more with your skin. Below are six skincare resolutions and gal or guy (of any age) can commit to with ease.

Resolution 1: Commit to a Routine that Works for You, Not Your Girlfriend or TikTok Influencer

Even though it may be tempting to splurge on products or trends your best friend is using, ensure that the products will be beneficial for your skin type and conditions. Also remember that trends will come and go. A solid skincare foundation is created without trendy practices or fads. Instead, refer back to the capsule collection I spoke about last fall.  A cleanser, active serum treating your concerns, eye cream, sunscreen, and moisturizer is a fabulous place to start.

Women often come in with redness or irritated skin, sometimes from over-exfoliation or trying too many products at once for their skin. Less is often more, and this is where a skincare concierge session will help most.  Customizing a routine that works for you is best for optimal skin health.

Resolution 2: Cleanse Your Face Every Single Night

The number one culprit to skin irritation or blotchy, uneven skin tone is skipping your evening cleanse. Find a cleanser that you look forward to using every night, possibly one that not only feels good on your skin, but also smells nice. Make sure the cleanser isn't drying out your skin. The last thing we want to do is strip any natural oils from your skin.  A nighttime cleanse will remove all of the bacteria, grime, sunscreen, and makeup from the day and allow your skin to breathe and repair overnight. Suggestions for moisturizing winter cleansers are Mandarin Cleansing Milk, Geothermal Clay Cleanser, and Hydra-Intense Cleansing Lotion.

Resolution 3: Incorporate Vitamin A and Vitamin C into Your Daily Routine

Skin health is dependent on essential micronutrients that your skin needs to thrive. Vitamin A is like food for your skin and arguably the most important ingredient. Since we are all deficient in this nutrient, we must apply it topically daily. Vitamin A products will normalize the skin cells and help them duplicate into new, healthy cells for skin repair.  Benefits from Vitamin A include thickening and strengthening the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, brightening the skin, lightening hyperpigmentation, treating acne, etc...the list goes on and on!

You have often heard of retinol as a derivative of Vitamin A. Not all Vitamin A's are retinol though. I suggest for almost every client to begin on the Environ Vitamin A Step-Up System either through the C Quence Serums or AVST Moisturizers. Both of these collections will allow you to begin at skin-friendly, low levels of Vitamin A to allow your skin time to acclimate and work its way up to higher levels. You can also use a gentle retinol serum with the C Quence Serum or AVST Moisturizer a few times a week for a faster approach!

Vitamin C serves as an antioxidant for your skin. It will protect your skin from environmental aggressors throughout the day, such as smoke, pollution, blue light, and UV rays.  Vitamin C will brighten the skin and also help promote collagen production. This ingredient used with sunscreen in the mornings will provide you with optimal protection from the sun.  We offer many options for Vitamin C, with Mela Even Cream and Defence Cream being two of the more potent forms

Resolution 4: Use Some Form of Sunscreen Daily, Even in the Winter

90% of skin aging and/or damage is caused from the sun! Let that sink in for a moment. You can prevent most aging by applying a form of sunscreen everyday. I recommend a lightweight, mineral sunscreen that feels like a second layer of skin. One suggestion is Plumscreen, a non-nano zinc oxide formula that feels silky like a serum or lightweight moisturizer. Additionally, wearing makeup with sunscreen for thick coverage will help protect your skin from the sun. Any extra layer to protect your bare skin is beneficial. The beloved Prime Skin skin tint has SPF 20 as well

Resolution 5: Clean Washcloths and Pillowcases Do Matter

You have a solid lineup in place but breakouts or irritations persist.  Why? Pause to think about easy changes you can make at home to provide a clean canvas for your skin. Always use a clean washcloth for your morning or evening cleanse. Using a dirty towel on your face while cleansing is slowing your progress down and nearly defeating the purpose of the cleanse.  A dirty washcloth can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Similarly, using a clean pillowcase is important since your skin is in major repair mode at night. Switching your pillowcases as often as possible will only help your skin stay clean and breakout-free.

Resolution 6: Clean Out Old Beauty Products and Welcome in New Ones

It's a new year - out with the old and in with the new! This applies to your skincare routine, too. If a product has been opened and sitting there for many months without use, chances are its prime time has passed. Take stock in what you really aren't using anymore and determine what you could bring in. Cleaning out and organizing skincare and makeup can be refreshing at the start of the year.  Scheduling a complimentary skincare concierge session will best help you determine if there are any holes in your routine and what your skin needs to reach your goals.

As always, I can help you create these changes and find the products that will yield real results for the new year.  Warm wishes for a happy and healthy 2024!

xx
